Kirigami Collage Art by Chelsea Hrynick Browne

I bet you've heard of kirigami and perhaps have even tried it... fold and cut construction paper snowflakes are a popular project in elementary school.

Recycled Magazine Kirigami
HeartArt (detail), magazine paper and Plexiglas

New York City artist Chelsea Hrynick Browne takes the technique to a new level by folding, cutting, then cutting apart, and layering hundreds, if not thousands, of upcycled and origami paper squares. She creates abstract collages and large-scale installations that range from ethereal moodiness to updated pop art.

Long-time readers might remember these two projects I originally created for the Inspired Bride website. With wedding season on the way, there's no better time to share them here as well. I've updated/simplified my instructions to show how to create the most basic quilled flower with leaves... pretty on place cards and favor boxes.

Darlingside's God of Loss Papercut Music Video by Andrew Benincasa

It's happened again... I have another new favorite band. Birds Say, an album by Darlingside, a Massachusetts group that originated when its four singer-songwriter-instrumentalists were students at Williams College, played on repeat at my house most of the weekend. One of the tracks, The God of Loss, is a hauntingly harmonious tune... the kind that stays with you for days. Have a listen/look:

Geometric Paper Cutting by Kristine Benum Braanen

Kristine Braanen is a paper cutting artist in Oslo, Norway. Her name may have a familiar ring because she was mentioned in a previous post about the Paper Artist Collective and also last week's feature on papercut artist Samantha Quinn. Kristine and Samantha are co-leaders of the PAC. That doesn't mean their work is similar... quite the opposite! Kristine's designs have a strong emphasis on geometry.

Learn to Stitch on Paper - A Round Up of Paper Embroidery Tutorials

In a recent newsletter, I asked readers to email me if there was anything they would like to see featured here on the blog. In no time at all a message popped up... I would love to see more about people who are combining paperwork and embroidery. I'm a needleworker myself, but love paper art and have been trying to figure out a way to combine the two.

Carol, thanks for asking... this post is for you and everyone who wants to give paper stitching a try.
