Two Paper Art Shows: The Nature of Money and Paper Heroes

Longtime readers will remember that each year about this time we have the opportunity to admire a new paper sculpture collection by Seattle artist Patty Grazini. Flowers, birds, butterflies and insects figure into the remarkable pieces that she meticulously crafts with much thought and skillful precision.

The relationship between money and nature is the theme I have chosen for my work this year. I have used money from all over the world to cut and create shadow boxes, and also a few three-dimensional pieces.

While working on this group, I found myself thinking about the beauty of the natural environment and its breakdown for profit.

Most of my recent work has been three-dimensional and freestanding. Assembling my work in shadow boxes has been challenging in some ways, but very enjoyable. Another departure for me was using only paper money.

I had cut and used money previously in combination with other papers, but never exclusively. I have also been a bit surprised and inspired seeing the beautiful graphics and colors.

Each time an email from Ilan lands in my inbox, I know it will tell me something of interest! This time it was a doubleheader, as another new venture of his is the opening of an Etsy shop. There you'll find his spectacular hand folded origami jewelry, made not with paper, but with high quality metals. Have a look at Garibi Origami.
