Painting with Paper - An Enticing New Book by Yulia Brodskaya

Paper quillers have been anticipating revered paper artist Yulia Brodskaya's new, tell all book, Painting with Paper - Paper on the Edge - and now you can enter to win a copy from Schiffer Publishing! [ENDED] Wait... tell all? Yes, rather than a project-based book, Yulia freely explains her personal process of creating on-edge art by painting with paper, rather than on it. Many colorful images serve as examples.

Ordinarily, I don't offer my opinion of a new book when it is featured in a sponsored giveaway, but in this case, as a dedicated quiller myself, I will say without reservation that I thoroughly enjoyed Yulia's thoughtful, conversational tone and found myself savoring the many nuggets of information she gathered from an advanced art education and innumerable hours spent experimenting with paper strips.

The included information is akin to taking an art course, but not in a dry, textbook sense. You'll learn about choosing colors, creating backgrounds, working with varied strip widths, composition, light and shadows, the rule of thirds, intentional blank space, and a method I've never thought to try... using undivided packs of quilling strips to create blocks of color.

Humorously, Yulia describes herself as a paper shopaholic with no plans to recover. She gives ideas on sourcing paper and shares the ways her work has evolved over the past decade, now using many dozens of shades in an average sized piece. And she's just like the rest of us paper rollers who make coils at any idle moment... for example, while waiting for her children at after-school activities.

There are surprises and little tips too... Yulia's entry into working with rolled and folded paper strips came about quite by accident. And would you believe she stores new bottles of glue with the lids off for months, allowing them to dry out somewhat so that the glue adheres strips more quickly? I was delighted to read she's my compatriot in mainly using tools gathered from around the house.

If you're like me, you'll keep the book on your bedside table for pleasurable night-time reading, and when you're finished, you'll place it on your coffee table for others to page through...  they'll be astounded at the explosions of color. Think of hardcover Painting with Paper as 176 pages of artistic lessons. Perhaps the best one of all is the encouragement Yulia offers to those who want to do what she does, but in their own, individual way.
