Make Ecogami's Amazing Low Poly Paper Craft Models

Are you familiar with the term low poly sculpture? This type of 3D model making is favored by paper crafters... one great feature of its popularity is that there are so many choices of what can be made. Éric François, low poly model designer at Ecogami, is constantly creating clever new designs for you to print, cut, crease, and glue into shape.

Building a model is a fun way to relax, not to mention you'll have an ah-worthy conversation piece to display when your task is completed. Voilà, new art for your home!

Éric creates original 3D models in categories such as dogs and cats, farm and forest animals, exotic animal head trophies, lamp shades, and Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day-themed sculptures. Each design is ideal at filling tranquil moments when you want to wind down, but also crave a sense of accomplishment.

A template arrives via email as a downloadable ZIP file that you'll print on A4 or A3 (letter or tabloid) sheets. Éric recommends paper that is at least 200 GSM, ideally 270. You (or your local print shop) will print the template on colored paper, or choose white paper and add an artistic touch with paint or markers after assembly.

You'll just need scissors, a scoring tool (bone folder or butter knife), metal ruler, and white glue on hand. In-depth instructions are included with each template. Children ages twelve and up are often able to complete a design independently.

As for Ecogami's start, Éric was intrigued by a paper animal trophy he noticed online in 2016. He purchased his first pattern, an elephant head, and found the cutting, folding, and gluing to be an enjoyable process. Perhaps best of all was the pride he felt when it was completed.

After constructing a collection of models, Éric took things to the next level by learning to create his own designs using 3D software and then teaching himself to turn them into 2D.
