Meet: The Art of Papercraft

The long-awaited book, The Art of Papercraft, by paper artist and teacher Helen Hiebert is almost here. It is available for pre-order as the release date is next Tuesday, February 15. Read on to learn what you can expect to find within its 320 pages!

The Art of Papercraft book is shown alongside an all-white paper cube with cut out leaves and flowers

It's a remarkably comprehensive paperback (Kindle format is also available) filled with guidance on selecting papers, tools, and adhesives along with in-depth technique instructions. Forty projects are examples of the decorative/useful marvels that can be made with simple paper, most with just a single sheet. Quite a few were designed by Helen, but she also invited a number of familiar names in the paper world to contribute ideas.

You'll find pop-ups, a woven paper wall hanging, Valentine love note, slice-form heart, paper lanterns, mini tunnel book, inflatable votive light, paper thread and a pleated display stand, just to name several along with templates.

What I especially admire about the book is that it offers more than projects. It also makes for interesting reading, as Helen delves into paper's versatility and history, along with properties like fiber content, thickness, weight, and grain. Contributor Susan Joy Share writes about applying items such as fasteners, eyelets, cords, and even magnetic strips to complete a project.

Techniques such as origami, cutting, folding, marbling, paper making, and quilling are covered (yep, even a project of mine is included). Your papercrafting skills will expand and you'll feel inspired to put your new knowledge to use right away.

Helen will be hosting a free book launch on Zoom next Tuesday, February 15 that's bound to be an enjoyable time. Register here

That same day, be sure to come back to All Things Paper as I will be posting a complete tutorial from the book to give you a taste of the project quality - and it's a beauty!

In the small shots below of a realistic crepe paper succulent designed by Janna Willoughby-Lohr, you can see a sneak peek of a project layout. You'll meet each guest artist via a bio and additional example of their work.
