Folded Paper Decor That's Anything But Flat

While my husband and I were babysitting for our grandson this past weekend, an origami lamp from Studio Snowpuppe that we gave to our son and daughter-in-law a decade or so ago caught my eye. It hangs in their foyer and looks as chic today as it did when it was brand new. Thus, the impetus for a post about origami home decor was born... I do love a virtual shopping experience!

A quick click over to Etsy and soon I had a link list of handmade origami items that fulfilled my requirements of stylish and practical (and if a bit of whimsy is involved, that's fine too).

A circular wall clock with a light beech wood frame. The clock face is made of intricately folded origami paper in two tones of green, creating a faceted, geometric pattern. The clock hands are also light wood.

One of the first things that captured my attention was this beautiful hand folded origami clock with beech wood frame and hands, available in a rainbow of colors from the shop, nellianna. Lo and behold, architect Nellianna van den Baard in the Netherlands is none other than one of the Studio Snowpuppe duo of creatives!

By the way, I love their gorgeous how-to book, Better Living Through Origami: 20 Creative Paper Projects for a Beautiful Home

An angular, white origami lampshade hanging in the corner of a room. The lampshade is decorated with a pattern of cute, cartoon-style dachshunds.

This adorable dachshund lampshade is another one of Nellianna's designs. Just think how cute it would look in a child's nursery thanks to the parade of printed pups.

A whimsical hanging lamp shaped like a whale. The body of the whale is a teal-colored paper, with a light yellow underside that glows warmly when illuminated.

The handsome paper whale lamp is a playful new fixture that I can picture hanging in a beach house or child's room.

A glass cloche with a marble base containing two origami koi fish, one reddish-brown and one blue and white with patterns, mounted as if swimming.

An elegant - and at the same time, whimsical - paper keepsake from The Cloche Collective would be a treasured gift... perhaps to celebrate a first anniversary for which the traditional present is paper.

A glass cloche with a marble and wood base showcasing two origami parrots in green and blue patterned paper, perched on a clear bead stand.

Safely contained within each glass cloche is one or two perfectly folded origami figures, such as koi fish, parrots, and a turtle.

A hand holds a glass cloche with a white base. Inside, a single origami sea turtle in patterned teal paper is displayed on a bed of sand with small seashells.

Artisan Bridgette will customize your text and offers free delivery all the way from Queensland, Australia.

'Merry Go' origami table lamp, with white, vertically pleated shade sits on a matching pleated base, which is mounted on a round teak wood bottom.

My hat is off to Tappan, the founder, project designer, and maker behind Etsy shop Brownfolds in Ahmedabad, India. Not only does he use recycled paper to create each origami lamp, but he empowers people with disabilities by hiring them to craft and package each item. In his words, "Choosing Brownfolds means choosing quality, sustainability, and social responsibility."

The contemporary MerryGo Lamp (above) has a teak wood base.

A person holding the illuminated 'Ferris' lamp. The circular, pleated paper lamp glows with a warm, inviting light, highlighting the intricate radial folds.

The Ferris, a 2 in 1 Hanging and Table lamp, is another smart design. The shipping cost is included with lamp purchases.

A person holds a large, white and grey 'Cocoon' origami hanging lamp. The lampshade is a complex geometric shape with multiple intersecting diamond-like folds.

If you prefer to make your own origami lamp, the pattern and instructions for making this dramatic Cocoon lampshade are available as an instant download.

A square white frame containing origami wall art. The art consists of sixteen tessellated paper tiles arranged in a grid, transitioning in color from white to light blue to a vibrant turquoise.

Looking for wall decor? I found some lovely framed pieces that any art enthusiast would admire. The framed piece (above) that features tessellated tiles in cool shades of summer is folded by Susan in Ottawa, Canada, owner of shop ArtisanOrigamiOttawa. Free delivery; always appreciated.

A framed artwork by T4Paper Art depicting two orange and red origami koi fish swimming in a stylized layered white paper stream with green paper leaves.

T4PaperArt in Mainz, Germany is owned by Tam Tran, who is Vietnamese. In addition to this lovely layered and framed coi fish piece (choose a dark or light frame), she quills beautifully so do have a look. Many items, including the coi, are delivered free.

A square white frame on a wood background, showcasing vibrant tessellated origami 'flowers' in various shades of blue, from aqua to royal blue and purple, arranged in a diamond pattern.

Lastly, is this vibrant framed piece featuring tessellated origami 'flowers' in shades of blue from shop WhiteCraneOrigami, owned by Matthew in the U.S. who has been an avid folder for more than ten years. Once again, many items in the shop have no shipping fee.

To sum up these beauties, I'll just say it’s amazing how paper can be transformed into such appealing and functional decor!
