Meet the Mother-Daughter Team Behind Easy Quilling Paper

Interest in the creative and relaxing paper craft of quilling has surged in recent years. With so many folks searching online for paper strips and tools, it's exciting when a new quilling supply company arrives on the scene.

I recently heard from Michelle of Easy Quilling Paper, about the company that she and her mother, Carolina, have launched in the past few years. In addition to offering essential paper and cardstock strips in 62 colors, along with an assortment of quilling tools, they are proud that their packaging provides a tidy storage solution. Another mission of the business is to assist quilling teachers.

A Hobby for Healing

  

Michelle, your website is quite comprehensive with necessary supplies, lots of helpful information for new quillers, as well as experienced ones who would like to teach the craft. When did you and your mother discover quilling? 

 

I had actually never heard of quilling until Mom introduced me to it! My brother had passed away and she found that quilling helped to distract her from sadness. She grew to love the hobby greatly. She’s always been a teacher, even when we lived in Venezuela, our home country, so she decided to start teaching quilling.

The Idea for a Business 

 

 

What gave you the idea to open a shop? 

 

Mom wanted flat strips for teaching classes as they would be easier to distribute to students than the typically curled skeins of strips and would also be easier for them to work with. Up until this point, she had been cutting paper with a little hand-held paper shredder. This was a lot of work, not to mention the strip edges weren't smooth and the color was dulled. 

 

I knew clean cuts were essential, so we bought an industrial paper cutter and perfected cutting our own paper.

Our strips gave us the idea to open an Etsy shop where we would offer them to other quillers. The intention has always been to make affordable, cleanly cuts strips available to anyone else who is frustrated with using a paper shredder, and to also offer a solution to managing strips once the package is open. 

 

We package the strips in resealable bags, each with a hanging hole for easy access and storage.

What the Shop Offers 

 

 

What items does Easy Quilling Paper sell? 

 

Our new website launched in January of this year and it is where we list many more items than are available in the Etsy shop. In addition to selling individual packages of quilling strips, we offer two types of Value Boxes - the Creator Box and Masterpiece Box. 

 

Note that our packages contain more strips than many other suppliers. For example, our 1/8" (3mm) packages contain 200 11" strips.

We also offer templates, kits, and quilling tools. You'll find an example of our instructions via this free floral template on the website. We also provide a free shapes chart and a number of video tutorials on our Easy Quilling Paper YouTube channel.

Mom designed and quilled all of the templates. They are written the same way she did instructions for popular classes that she originally taught in Mexico, so we have made her method available for other teachers.

Quilling for Healing 

 

 

 

I saw on your Instagram grid that Carolina has been ill. How is she now? 

 

 

My mom had a cancer diagnosis this year and thankfully is doing well now. She had to decrease her teaching schedule at a number of libraries and senior centers in Oklahoma City while undergoing treatment, but is getting back into teaching classes now. Another one of her ventures is a “Quilling for Healing” club to help people de-stress by quilling.

Michelle, what tasks do you handle for the company?

 

I help with the Etsy shop and our new website/pictures/marketing/customer service - anything not related to actually quilling, haha! Although I figured I’d give it a shot so here is my first and only project this far. I would like to do more as soon as I find time.
