Stitches on Paper: Discover Ana Falceta’s Embroidered Mixed-Media Art

The contemporary stitched paper art of Ana Falceta in Waterdown, Ontario is a joyful profusion of vibrant color. She delights in crafting rich, highly textured abstract compositions by layering watercolor, ink, and acrylic gouache on heavy watercolor paper. To elevate each piece further, she often incorporates collaged or woven paper elements alongside an array of hand-embroidered stitches.

From Bookbinding to Textile Design

Born in Brazil, Ana worked in tourism and hospitality for a number of years while developing a passion for hand bookbinding. After making her home in Canada, she pursued her creative calling at Sheridan College, where she earned a degree in Textile Design. Last year, Ana spoke to the North Shore Needle Arts Guild in Vancouver about her artistic evolution from paper arts to stitching.

"Swirl of Joy": Where Paint Meets Thread

Ana's work has garnered a passionate following on Instagram... not only for her striking aesthetic, but also for the intimate storytelling she shares alongside her process. For example, meet Swirl of Joy:

Abstract square artwork titled Swirl of Joy, featuring concentric painted spirals in orange, brown, and pink, centered by a bright pink Spiro embroidery stitch and dotted with gold French knots.

"I started by layering warm shades of pink, orange, and brown, letting the colours flow in a soft, spiral-like motion - almost like they were dancing across the page. The movement felt so natural and full of energy that I knew I wanted to carry that same vibe into the stitching."

"To keep the flow going, I added the Spiro stitch as my focal point and included delicate details with running stitch, backstitch, and coral stitch to balance the composition."

"I love how this piece feels - vibrant, dynamic, and a little bit playful. It's one of those works that just makes me smile, and I hope it brings a little joy to your way too!"

Tools of the Trade & Acrylic Templates

If you've ever watched her Instagram process reels, you know that viewers frequently ask about her secret for achieving precise stitches on paper.

To guide the thread without damaging the paper, Ana uses customized acrylic stitching templates and makes them available directly through her website shop.
