As an ardent admirer of paper art created by Yulia Brodskaya, as I know many of you are, I was curious to learn more about her unique method of creating paper 'brushstrokes' via her user-friendly online course, Painting with Paper Foundations.
The nearly five hour, self-paced course can be accessed via Yulia's website, Art Yulia. Geared to beginners, as well as those with paper art experience, she begins by telling about her creative journey from childhood onward. Yes, her artistic talent was evident from an early age... in fact, she began taking art lessons after school beginning at just age five.
Course Overview
Made up of six modules, Yulia walks viewers through her favorite supplies, including paper, card, and glue, then details her strip cutting process and the foundational techniques of creating folded bundles of paper or card that give the impression of brushstrokes. Color mixing is also explained.
What You'll Learn
Students begin by making an abstract flower, followed by a vivid sunflower and an eye-catching toucan. Note that Yulia's brushstroke method is quite unlike traditional paper quilling, which is mostly composed of coiled strips that are pinched into various shapes, such as teardrops and marquises.
While both start with paper strips, Yulia's hand-cut strips are much wider and heavier than typical quilling paper. When not folding bundles, she sometimes uses traditional techniques like rolling tight coils, folding zig zags, and fringing.
The
course wraps up with key information about the importance of
photographing one's work, choosing project references, and a bonus
challenge that encourages learners to undertake ambitious works by
consolidating
previous skills.
Yulia doesn't expect participants to mimic her art exactly. Instead, she fosters a sense of creative freedom by urging students to develop their unique style while learning her refined methods.
Community and Final Thoughts
Included in the purchase is access to a private online community that provides invaluable feedback. Students may share images of their work, ask questions, and interact with one another. Yulia readily gives feedback by answering questions and offering professional advice.
